The Small Grants are a financial mechanism that the Park Administration offers to the local communities, based on specific conditions.

Piatra Craiului National Park could not carry out its activities without the support of the communities nearby. In this respect, the communities must be involved in a sustainable development process, which is friendly for the environment, creating also benefits for the local people and support for the Park in its biodiversity conservation, local traditions and landscape preservation activities.

For the implementation of this programme the Operational Manual, and the Applicant Guidelines (Measure 1,Measure 2) for each projects rounds were realised, with the participation of the representatives from each targeted community (Zarnesti, Magura, Pestera, Ciocanu, Dambovicioara si Rucar).

The total amount, US$ 242.000 was coming from the Global Environmental Facility trough the World Bank within the Biodiversity Conservation Management Project.

There were four rounds of projects between 2002 and 2005, being financed 83 proposals. The programme was basically composed from two financing measure:
Measure 1 - "Individual Grants"
Type 1.1 - Small rural tourism infrastructure (e.g. equipments for bed and breakfast facility)
Type 1.2 - Camping facilities within or nearby the park area
Measure 2 - "Common Grants" - pasturelands improvement, garbage collection facilities, ecological education, small diary, tourist information points

In order to access the fund, the applicants should fulfill a Grant Application Form and a budget proposal, which were further evaluated by an external evaluation committee in both desk and field appraisal.
